WORLD CUP HISTORY
Round 1
1995, 2000

In the tightly contested Pacific Qualifiers, Fiji progressed with a superior for and against. Fiji won one game at the last World Cup in 2000.

Rugby League began in Fiji in 1992 when the country was included in the World Sevens.

Today nearly 500 Fijians play Rugby League.

The domestic competition is known as the Vodafone Championship Cup with 12 clubs competing. There is also a Vodafone Super Six competition with combined teams and a State of Origin match.

The Vodafone sponsorship is for three years, 2006-2008 and is worth $500,000.

Two grounds are used for competition every Saturday of the season.

Four clubs have juniors ranging from under 13 to under 19 and the game is played in four schools.

Fiji as level 1 and Level 2 coaches two coaches recently earned their Senior Level certificate at a course held in Narrabeen, on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Fiji will play the junior Kangaroos in October this year and Tonga on 19 October in Tonga. There is a possibility Fiji will play PNG in February,2008.

The goals for Fijian Rugby League are ambitious but within reach-to be the No.1 football code in the country and lure talented rugby players across.

Early indications suggest two players, Alipate Tani and Waisale Suka will be just two of the big guns come World Cup 2008.
