Samoa are the “new boys” on the Rugby League block and have excelled in making the final 10 for the 2008 World Cup.
The game didn’t begin in Samoa until 1985. Today there is a 12-team competition in what has been a Rugby Union stronghold for so many years.
And today there are 600 registered players between 17 and 21. Schools are yet to adopt Rugby League but the fact that Samoa is now on the international stage could lead to a change of football preferences.
Samoa are riding on the back of ace goal-kicker Joseph Paulo who converted seven goals from eight attempts in the Repechage final against Lebanon.
And the very presence of the highly talented and willing Nigel Vagana is a tremendous boost to Samoa’s World Cup prospects.
The plusses for Samoa are their power and pace.
Samoa will sport an outstanding array of talent, that is liberally distributed throughout the NRL and the English Super League.
The players include, Tangi Ropati, George Carmont, Nigel Vagana, Joseph Paulo, Hutch Maiava and Ali Lauitiiti.
