What will happen if England win the world cup?

if England win the world cup, will people just ignore it like they ignored GBs 3-0 whitewash over NZL? or will there be a lot of media attention because of England football/soccer not qualifying for Euro 2008?

i've been thinking, will people watch England throughout the world cup because of the failure of the england football/soccer team? and do you think RL will spread all over England?

I hope all of this happens because it's better than soccer. note: the only reason football/soccer in england gets a lot of media attention is because not much happens on the pitch, compared to RL where it's a lot more exciting on the pitch, i would like RL to get more media attention though. :) thanks I'm looking forward to everyone's replies :)

Re: What will happen if England win the world cup?

    Gday Alex,

I think its an interesting point you raise. I've never been to the UK so I have no idea how much media attention a World Cup victory would get them, but I would imagine it would be a fair amount. I think if England were to win it, it would do wonders for Rugby League all over Europe. I also do not agree with the other two replies saying England can not win it. Australia will be favourites no doubt, especially in their home country, but England like so many other international teams are improving so quickly which is fantastic. It feels to me as though international Rugby League is really coming back to life again after the damage the Super League/ARL war did to our game.

I think this World Cup is going to be the foundation of a new era of IRL in terms of worldwide competition. I do hope they start advertising it more though as it is not too far away now. I will be getting my tickets to the final this week, pity the A grade seats sold out long ago!.

Re: What will happen if England win the world cup?

I agree with Super Steve that this World Cup will really put International RL on the map. Don't forget from next year the BBC (the main terrestrial tv broadcaster in UK) will be showing at least one England international a year-which will help create awareness of the England Rugby League brand.

Also the emergence of France (thanks to the Catalan Dragons) and in a few years of Wales (thanks to the Celtic Crusaders) means that a meaningful international competition will be able to be developed in Europe which will attract even more attention. The problem we have had over the last few years is that no-one in Europe is good enough to come close to England, whereas England haven't been good enough to come close to Aus or NZ-therefore this has meant a very mundane international scene, however this will change I feel, and I honestly believe England can (injuries permitting) give the Aussies and Kiwis a real run for their money at this years World Cup.

I live in London and I can tell you from a first hand perspective League is really growing down here, and media wise only 2 weeks ago we saw the 1st ever 8 page pull out in a national sunday newspaper previewing this years Millenium Magic in Cardiff. These are signs that RL is growing, although I have to say that if England do win the World Cup, unfortunately I don't think they will be allowed the Civic reception in Trafalgar Square that the Union mob received, but who knows maybe in a few years...or do we even want a civic reception in Trafalgar square??!! haha

    Hey Benda,

What was the result of the Australia v NZ match in the 2005 Tri Nations?  What a build up and what a let down.

Re: What will happen if England win the world cup?

I would like to see more RL international matches played at Wembley.  At present all the internationals are played up north and us poor sods down south have a very long way to travel.  On another subject, I think its high time the Rugby Union apologised for a pointless and spiteful hundred years war.

Was trying to be funny... show irony in the comment type thing... obviously I failed misserable. Yeah look Wembley would be nice if we knew the crowds would be at least 70,000. Anything under that won't do. even last year CC at 84,000 looked quite empty in the 120,000 seat stadium.

Re: What will happen if England win the world cup?

I was under the impression it went from 90 to 100+? Maybe I am mistaken. Still Last years CC final sepit such a large crowd looked like had many holes in it.
