    bad news for tonga.......again

Call me a Kangaroo, says rising star Mateo

    Adrian Proszenko | March 30, 2008

Rising Parramatta star Feleti Mateo has finally ended speculation over his Test ambitions, pledging his allegiance to Australia.

And after a red line was seemingly ruled through Eric Grothe's representative career following his infamous "no-show" at a Kangaroos training session, the door has been left ajar for a return to the national side.

Mateo is in a three-way tug of war for his services at international level, having already represented Tonga while also being eligible for Australia and Great Britain.

The ball-playing lock has been torn about which country he wants to represent - until now.

"I'd like to play for NSW and Australia, that would come first," Mateo told The Sun-Herald.

"People keep talking about Origin and it's something I'd like to play.

"I was born here and raised here and I'm a proud Tongan as well, and also English.

"But [Australia] is the best side and you want to play for the best."

Mateo was man of the match in Friday night's sensational golden-point win against Newcastle, prompting halfback-turned-commentator Andrew Johns to talk him up as a Blues contender.

Shifting from five-eighth to lock to make room for Tim Smith, Mateo came up with some big plays, including a brilliant break to set up winger Grothe for a crucial first-half try.

The Lalor Park junior qualifies for Great Britain through his mother and has played for Tonga under one of his idols, coach Jim Dymock.

"He was my favourite player growing up and he's had a big influence on me," Mateo said.

However, the Tongan experience could count against him, with Kangaroos coach Ricky Stuart saying his preference was not to select players who had played for other countries.

"Jimmy Dymock, the king of Tonga, will kill me," Stuart joked when asked if he would try to poach Mateo from under the nose of his good friend and Sharks assistant coach.

"We can't go picking players who have already played for other countries. That's just my opinion, anyway."

However, he may have softened his hard-line stance on Grothe. Stuart was livid after the Eels winger skipped a Kangaroos training session last year and intimated he would never be considered for his country again.

But Grothe has subsequently sent a letter of apology to Australian selectors and also contacted Stuart about meeting to discuss his Test prospects. "It's a matter of Eric making the next move," Stuart said.

"It's up to Eric to ring me and organise a meeting.

"I'm happy to sit down and have a coffee or a beer with him but it's up to him to show me he has the enthusiasm and wants to do it.

"I like Eric Grothe, he's a good fellow, but he has to have a different attitude towards rep football if I was even going to think about it."

ahahah fu*king sh*t, what a load. "you want to play for the best" what a sellout. I saw it coming as soon as johns said this might be the combo for NSW this year. Keep your mouth shut johns.

he wouldnt make the aussie team, and he isnt eligible as he has played for tonga within the last 2 years. we need to give nations like tonga regular test matches throughout the year or their players will keep leaving them as they will not be playing regular rep footy.

I think we also need to give them not only tests, but try to introduce a state of origin for them as well. Dont know how you could acheive this because i have not thought about it that hard, the only thing i have thought about is having all these island guys playing a origin type game, what a battle that would be. Probably make origin look like a school tournament.Any ideas?

MOst of those countries do have their own versions of SoO, they call it something else buts its still competitive none the less. I think regular test and tournaments is the way to go. I trully do belive this is the way to go.

    Re: bad news for tonga.......again

This is something that constantly bamboozles me. Everyone talks about what a proud people/race the polynesians are but I just don't get it. In RU they (NZRU & ARU) actively poach the best of the pacific island players into playing for NZ and AUS and they're effectively killing the sport in the pacific but as far as I can tell, the ARL isn't inviting these kids to pledge their allegiance in anyway shape or form yet because they've grown up here they want to play for Australia yet live their lives in a very much traditional manner (ie Tattoos, religous beliefs, cultural heritage etc)............why would these kids hold a flame for playing for a country which has such unbelievable depth that they are practically no chance at playing for NSW, QLD or Australia and effectively kill off any chance they have of ever playing Rep. footy? What the???

    Re: bad news for tonga.......again

Agree 100% with you, they would be the 1st picked to play for their island, why jeapedise that wanting to play for oz.

Something needs to be done about this and fast, with all the polynesions now coming into league.

They are proud of there heritage and need to be able to show this by being available for there team.

And we need to support this.

Isn't that kind of a contradiction of two rules, only aussies are allowed to play SoO yet if even if he makes the NSW side he can still play for Tonga? Seems a bit weird to me, I mean technically He's still a tongan international until he is picked for australia.

while i agree with you, dont forget that some polynesians are australian as well, and naturally want to play for their country. but if we gave every nation a large number of meaningful test matches and tournaments every year, and didnt just look after aus, eng and nz, then maybe some players would commit to island countries their whole careers, and not only if they miss out on aus or nz.

Exactly hutch... I think everyone realises there are players with dual and even tri nationalities... that's fine, as long as they stick to the country they want to represent. The RLIF can go a long way in helping this along... I have said it many times, even come up with my own version of tournaments of how things could work.
