Increasing Rugby League's Popularity in South Africa

South Africa's sporting landscape is dominated by its love for Rugby Union.  Being the most marketable sport in the country, it is the most recognised sport among South Africa's populace.  It's why Rugby League is a minority sport in South Africa.  The good thing is South Africa's political history will give Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) a chance to build the game of Rugby League in South Africa.

South Africa's past-stance towards its black population led to the majority of the country's registerd Rugby Union players being caucasian.  The vast majority of registered Rugby Union players in South Africa still are caucasian. [1] South Africa's caucasian population is less than 5,000,000. [2] Therefore, the RLIF should promote the game of Rugby League among the 35,000,000 black South Africans who do not play Rugby Union.

A lot of black South Africans are hesitant to play Rugby Union.  The South African Rugby Union (SARU) tried to counter this by enforcing a quota system among the country's provincial teams.  It's mandatory for each provincial side to field at least 2 blacks on the field at any one time. {3]

The RLIF should be using this to their advantage.  Building the game at the grassroots level is the first step to doing this.  The game should be promoted to the black community.  It can be promoted as the "working man's game" as it is seen in northern England and eastern Australia.  It'll appeal to the black population as most of them are working-class people.  They don't share much in common with the whites who play Rugby Union, therefore they might view it as a "black man's game".

The fact blacks are better suited to playing Rugby League is another reason to promote the game amongst them.  Blacks tend to be very athetlic and quick.  Their talent would be wasted in Rugby Union, as the structure of the game limits its players' ability to run freely with the ball.

Financial incentive would be another reason to promote Rugby League among South Africa's black community.  The National Rugby League (NRL) and European Super League (ESL) could form a link between themselves and the governing body for Rugby League in South Africa.  It would allow promising talent from South Africa to get a chance to play in the NRL and ESL. This would be a wonderful incentive for the blacks, as Australia and England are more prosperous and developed than South Africa.  It's why a lot of caucasian South Africans are moving to England and Australia in large numbers.
