1 - An exciting and open tournament with plenty of great running rugby on show.

2 - To make a profit (at least not make a loss).

    3 - Great crowds.

4 - Large television audiences in various parts of world.

1 - I'm almost sure this will happen (and personally I won't be jumping off the nearest cliff if there's a few one sided games...this happens in all sports).

2 - According to Colin Love, Richard Lewis et al this world cup is already guarenteed to make a profit (even if it is only $1) due to the carefully planned marketing and advertising already contracted.

3 - Although tickets are still only available to Aussies or Aussie residents (a true disgrace in my opinion...this is the WORLD cup) I'm sure that the games will get goood attendances with many selling out.  For me if a game doesn't look like selling out the local councils should approach the organising comittee (or vice versa) with a view to giving tickets to local school children.  This happens in France and used to happen in the UK.

4 - This depends largley on the WC organisers contacting news agencies and television/radio channels.  In my opinion some areas eg Japan, USA, Argentina should be offered the WC for free or next to nothing as exposure is something that would surely help increase interest in rugby league.
Fans can also play their part by contacting the news agencies/radio & tv stations in their area/country and ask what plans they have for coverage of the rugby league world cup 2008.  If the answer is 'none' bang a drum and ask 'WHY THE HELL NOT?'

Needs one of the so called 'smaller nations' like PNG or Tonga to upset one of the big three.

The RU World Cup had that with Argentina going a long way.People love to see the underdogs doing well

Failing that someone to knock Willie Mason's head off in the first match.

png could surprise NZ or england

and one 'smaller' country will be in the semis...if you count france as a 'smaller' league country ;)

    Re: successful world cup!!

I agree with all 4 points. I think you have already hinted at this but we need huge media covergae not just in television but in the newspapers, radio etc. I think this World Cup will really signal the re-emergence of international Rugby League. The World Cup qualifiers have already achieved the 1st goal of an exciting tournament, lets hope the main event can also cover the other 3 aims stated here
