Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

My scottish mate is getting excited about the prospect of scotlands chances of making the semis by topping their pool, and although a lot of their best players arent really scottish born, the players they can choose from the NRL and ESL look daunting, and i believe they can beat Ireland, and knock France over if they can gel as a team.

Just wondering for those of you in england who watch the superleague, what others players are allegable you know of for scotland? would love to hear some names from people, so far I have:

Correct me if im wrong on the superleague players by the way-

ESL:  Richard horne, graeme Horne? (Hull FC), Are they injured at moment? Danny Brough (wakefield) Michael Monaghan (warrington)  Lee Gilmour (St Helens) Daniel Heckenberg (Harlequins)  Andrew Henderson (castleford)  Kevin Henderson (wakefield)   Paul Jackson (Huddersfield) Ben Fisher (Hull KR)   Duncan Macgillivray??

NRL: Ian Henderson (NZ Warriors) Scott Logan (Raiders)  Peter Wallace  (Broncos) Joel Monaghan (Raiders)- if he misses Kangaroo selection) Michael Robertson (Eagles)  James McManus (knights) Lachlan Coote(Panthers)  Keith Galloway (Tigers) Chris Armit (Bulldogs)  Adam Macdougal (Knights)  Ben Macdougall (storm)  Luke Douglas  (Sharks)  Luke Macdougall??

    Anyone know any others?

I think Scotland will do pretty well actually and they will be the suprise packet. I think they can beat France and Fiji but think they will stuggle against most likely Samoa in the Semi Final qualifier.

Duncan Macgillvary will definately be playing for Scotland if selected but I think the Monaghan brothers are Irish descent aren't they not Scottish? Richard Horne has been injured and probably won't make the World Cup but I think Graeme Horne is fully fit.

From the Super League you have missed out Hull KR winger Jon Steel who was actually born and brought up in Scotland. He was injured earlier in the year but I think he is fully recovered now.

Thanks Londonleaguer.  I actually read in an article, after joel monaghan made the kangaroos preliminary squad, that he is also allegable to play for scotland with his brother michael if he misses, so im just going off that.  And they havent been named in the Irish team, so guessing they must be scottish

Yeh maybe you are right then and they can play for Scotland. I know they were interested in playing for Ireland but maybe they have found out they don't qualify or perhaps they just aren't interested in playing for Ireland. Is Peter Wallace definately going to be playing for Scotland then?

I think Joel Monaghan has had a great year but I'm not sure he will make the Australian 24, in which case he will be a great addition for Scotland

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Well Peter Wallace missed out to cooper cronk in the aussie team, and has stated his interest to play for scotland, and the organisers have given him the green light to play for the kilts, even though hes played for NSW this year, so yep i expect him to be named.  Theyve got a wealth of halves to choose from dont they? someones gonna miss out- Peter Wallace, Danny brough, Graeme Horne, and apparently Michael Monaghan has been a star in the halves for warrington this years, hmm decisions.

And your right, joel might not make the kangaroos, and would be a great name for scots, but with gasnier out, and naming a 24 man squad, he may sneak in on form alone for cover for injuries maybe.

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Yeh true Monaghan is definately a chance for the Aussies but for Scotlands sake I hope he doesn't make the Oz team and plays for them. Yeh they have a aome depth in the halves and in the hooking role, although Graeme Horne isn't really a scrum half he usually plays in the back row, his brother Richard is the halfback but like I said before he has played one game all year, lost 12 kilos and will struggle big time with fitness.

In the hooking department though they have Ian and Andrew Henderson (NZ Warriors and Castleford) as well as Ben Fisher (Hull KR) so that will be a bonus for them.

Michael Monaghan has been good this year for Warrington but if he does play for Scotland I can't see him getting picked in front of Peter Wallace or Danny Brough. As you said Wallace has played Origin and is a very good player, while Danny Brough has had a great year for Wakefield, has played in all the World Cup qualifiers and is the current Captain so I can't see him not getting the starting 13. Maybe Monaghan could be another option at hooker!!!

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Agreed that Danny Brough will be the first one picked, i dont see a lot of superleague here in new zealand, but watched him in the WC qualifiers, and the odd ESL game we get and hes still going good like he was when he played for Hull yeah.  But think michael monaghan will at least make the bench.  As you say maybe as hooker on the bench.  Coz Ian Henderson i recken (I mite be a bit one eyed being a NZ warriors fan) is along with buderus, the form hooker of the NRL at the moment.  Hes gonna have a massive world cup too!

Oh and my bad, i meant Richard horne not graeme, got them mixed up.  Is he still injured or is he back now aint he? Mite get his fitness up a bit for the last couple of rounds maybe??  But not sure where scotland would fit him in.

On a down note doesnt look like Adam Macdougall will play, at the moment hes weighing up a move to union

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Yeh Danny Brough has been even better than when he was at Hull. Earlier in the year he was talked about as a Man of Steel contender (the best player in the comp award) and he was also a front runner for the Albert Goldthorpe medal (our version of the Dally M Award) Michael Monaghan should definately get in somewhere though I agree.

I'm also a fan of the NZ Warriors and saw Ian Henderson play on tv over here last week against Brisbane and then Cronulla, looks to be in great form as you said (and also Jerome Ropati was awesome he'll go good for the Kiwis!)

Richard Horne is back in full time training now yes but for Hull there is only 2 games left (next weeks cup final and then the last game of the Super League season against Hull KR) so Horne will probably only play one more game at best. Therefore I can't see him making the Scottish squad especially if Peter Wallace and Michael Monaghan pull on the Blue jersey.

As you say it's a big shame about Adam Macdougall would have liked to see him go around once more.

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Yeah cant wait to hear their squad announcement, but guess them and england will make us wait until october for their 24 man squads by the looks?

What club do you support, harlequins?

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Well scotland named their team no Macdougal, no monaghan brothers, no lee Gilmour.  And no richard horne, even though he looks like making a return from injury for the challenge cup final, i would have thought they would at least have named him in a 40 man squad just incase!

And Peter Wallace has pulled out due to injury concerns, thats a big blow.

But most of all, NO JAMES MCMANUS? Whats doing there?

Re: Scotland team looks real strong, thoughts?

Heard up in these parts that unless the NRL players contacted Scotland and expressed an interest in playing, then the Scottish management weren't going to run around Oz pleading with them to play for us.

IMHO it's a fair one. None of those mentioned by Kiwi League appeared interested in the qualifiying stage. i.e a grey, wet, cold, miserable winter Sunday in Scotland for the Wales game.

I and probably most other Scottish fans would rather have less talented players giving 100% effort when they pull on the 'Dark Blue', rather than "Oh, bollox,I've not been selected by Australia, Scotland/Ireland/Tonga/Fiji/Samoa will do then" or "I've had a hard season in the NRL, I can't be bothered playing a couple of games for the land of my birth/parents/grandparents in a World Cup" (McManus in a NT newspaper). It's a Scottish thing.

Steve Mac always said that he would stick by the guys that got us to the WC. I for one am happy with that. A bit of honour and loyalty. Good onya, Steve!

See you in Canberra & Gosford. I'll be the bloke in the Scotland jumper and kilt!

    That's fair enough.

Anyone heard anymore on the squad? Be interested to see how competitive they are looking a month out.

I don't know much about the squad, but I do rate the Scotland Rugby League website highly.

Got his from another forum. Apparently there's a Scottish supporters group doing something for the Cup:

    Tartan Army

That'll raise the kilt ratio for sure...
