I think this is right, because i lived in brisbane, it never died out, we all felt good about the broncos, and the other clubs slowly started getting more players through, whick lead to a more intense queensland cup, plus the added club incentives for making the n.r.l , its at its peak again now, anytime in the future would be a good time for another team, If they do expansion right now, and the only problem for any team would be quality players, like 3 lions mentioned, alot of the players move interstate because they have a affilyation with clubs down south.

The QRL can amend the problem by adopting a different selection policy for the Queensland Origin side.  Introducing a rule that disallows the selectors from choosing players who are based in NSW would make a lot of Queenslanders think twice about playing for NSW clubs.

I disagree, alot of QLD's best players are based outside of QLD, besides we can't stop tham from playing in sydney or melbourne, they are entitled to live where they like and play for whoever they sign with, aslong as they bring they're QLD passion come SOO time. I think you will find a few of them will move QLD if there home city got granted an NRL team. I don't want SOO selection turn into Australian selection, what i mean is i don't wan t players based in NSW or any other state, or NZ to be overlooked much like ESL based aussies getoverlooked for the Kangaroos. I mean find you're best 17, doesn't matter where they live just as long as they bring they're passion for the team.

E3L i think your idea of merging most of the sydney based clubs is not a good one. I know if the bulldogs were merged with 3 other clubs i would be pissed off. The bottom line is if you did this there would be a sh*t load of pissed off fans and that is something no sport wants. Bulldogs fans would not want to watch a game with parra fans and so on. The local derbys are great and should not be interfered with. Sure maybe you would be able to get rid of or move 1 or maybe 2 max teams from sydney but no more.

As I said earlier, the rivalries between the BRL clubs didn't stop Brisbane's community from supporting the Broncos in 1988.  The rivalries between the Sydney-based NRL clubs has not stopped them from banding together and supporting the New South Wales Blues.  If my memory is correct, then there was a fierce rivalry in the National Soccer League among the fans of the Melbournian clubs.  It hasn't stopped Melbourne's community from embracing the Melbourne Victory in the A-League.

The A-League eliminated the cultural boundaries that were associated with the NSL club's.  The eight licences that were available were granted Australia's largest urban centres.  Each urban centre could field one team only.

An NRL franchise known as the "West Sydney Redbacks" might unite some of the Rugby League fans from Parramatta, Canterbury, Penrith, Campbelltown and Leichhardt.  If not, then it might unite the people from the surrounding LGA's.

I agree with you that there should be 5 QLD NRL teams, IMO these would be Broncos, Titans, Cowboys, CQ and Sunny coast. That is a good even spread as these 5 teams cover the big cities in QLD. Broncos = Brisbane, Titans = Gold Coast, some outer brissy suburbs, cowboys = cairns and townsville, sunshine coast = sunshine coast and gympie, CQ = Rockhampton, Mackay, Bunderburg. This is good enough for my likings i mean i don't think there is anything wrong with 1 city the size of brisbane have 1 team to support, besides driving from brisbane to GC last year i made the discovery that some outer brisbane suburbs i.e Mt Gravatt are just as close to GC then they are to brisbane, maybe closer. On the CQ side of things i know know most of what there is to know about RL in rocky so if anyone wants to know anythiong i should be able to cover it. I mentioned for the first time a copuple of moths ago that i think CQ would be able to host an NRL, actually i think i was the first person to mention it on this forum and now there is alot of talk about it, i would be all for a CQ NRL team, i would even apply for a job somewhere in the process if it did happen.

Whoever said not to worry about afl too much beacause they dont have a world cup i disagree. uve jus got to look at america, American football is pretty much soley played in the us, but is a massive game. i know u cant really compare oz to the usa due to demographics and population, but if afl got a stranglehold like american football it would be a disadter for RL in oz.

all these mergers? why why why? why destroy a club with so much tradition and culture?? the nrl can just expand to be bigger rather than culling sydney teams! with the overseas quato being reduced massively in Superleague in the next few years we have a load of aussies needing a club to play for! and if the world cup is a success playing numbers should increase worldwide, similar to how unions did! get a perth team on track for 2012 and another team from either sunshine coast/ wellignton/ central coast team aswell!

 

 

 

Hello Jack, i said that, what a.f.l has got to understand is that they wont take over america? and our game league is a better product for the yanks, they like nice tight fields, if you think they are going to adopt a round cricket field,? no, you have to flow with the americans, or you will never market anything, they might enjoy watching the game, but it would be harder to get them to turn up every week, its such a huge market, One player a year gets nearly there whole budget for a year? anyway, league is growing nicely over there, we have only been there 10 years as a comp, and plodding.

Look jimmy, i dissagree with you, totally , we can support 6 teams in queensland, no problems? not 5  hehe

And as for new zealand, let them keep building on the back of the warriors, why take something away, like we did with perth and aderlaide and then look back and say, geee why did we do that, let things roll along, if they are not broken, why try fixing them, world cup will further help new zealand grow, 5 years we will be going, hey look at new zealand, haven't they bounced back? Leave the sydney clubs as they are, nobody wants anymore down sizing, they are growing, not decreasing, if anyone has pointed this out? All the clubs are doing fine, and we dont want a them verse us attutude as in qld v nsw.

In origin this is fine, as we all know, but never do we keep players going in between these two states, or we will be fighting ourselves and making league even harder to promote.?

Now i have said there was something brewing, and unfortunatly it has happened before gallop wanted it to, david gallop has justed anounced that we will be expanding perth and queensland teams, because of a.f.l he has to play his cards sooner than he would have liked to.

I really think he wanted to hold back this anouncement until after world cup, so be it. He is now forced to play the power game, and perth are going to get great benifit from this, expect a bold showing by them in the jim beam cup? Look it has to be said, anyone can see that league is back, full on and about to grow even further, tickets are flying out the door already for this world cup, just feel sorry for anyone who hesitates to grabbing they tickets, because you wont get a seat. League is a train, i have said this, you are either on it or you get left behind. I got me tickets on the midnight express baby.

Druzik, your all for the local comps doing well after expansion, the more i think about the broncos makes me wonder wheather expansion should be centred around local clubs.  Now take the sunshine coast, they have a good local following, now why would you want to damage this in any way?

This is my thinking, instead of just giving them a new team to follow, lets do this but put incentives in place, like no big clubhouse and club, but your teams clubs are the training and ficilaties for your new team, and the players are encouraged to come through the local comp? Build a big stadium for the team to play out of, but also use this for local games and just have like shops and changing rooms for the teams, this will further grow the local comp without having to go through the same old thing brisbane suffered, local clubs having to regrow and compete, hope they get this right, David Gallop should put it back on the areas to have them show that they wont affect the local comp, and can support a new team for at least five years, to allow for growth and disruption.

Look it is a no brainer to most people, these areas are screaming to have a team, but let them have the responability to show this. And let them in, people love league, why try to stop what people want, but get it right, dont just say hey look ,,, we have a team in tassie, would love this but need corparate dollars. I think central coast even though they have no corparate support, can grow this by being there? And if singleton wants a team there, then make sure he is going to put the effort in, not like Rhichard Branson, One bad year and hes off.

What has Gallop said oikee? can you put in a source of some kind. Would be great IMO to see a perth team and a sunny coast team, whether it be as soon as 2009 or 2013 i think it will happen. I think this may be a reply from gallop to AFL and to a bigger extent the a-league. I don't know why but the a-league has been attacking league lately which is stupid IMO because it's easy enough for the 2 codes to co-operate since the seasons are alternate, besides i think soccer would pay a big price by trying to kill league since alot of a-league fans are league fans too, i would say alot of league fans would not take kindly to soccer attacking the game they love. The a-league has recently granted new franchises to townsville and GC, which are very much league strong holds.

Yes jim it is a response to the other expansions by the 2 other codes, come out in the paper today.

Like i said it was not something he wanted to worry about, but no harm done, just means he will now have these areas beating down his door while he has so much to do this year. They need to sit back now and worry about the season ahead. There was always going to be expansion, easier for league to do because everyone wants this to happen in these areas, not to sure about the other codes, they will find it tough if they think they can just walk into league territory and put up shop. I know i would not support any of them? Soccer cant kill off league, never will, they are going to learn the hard way about winning loyalty as well. I have said all along that league and soccer are the way to grow. But if they keep up with this we are bigger than you crap, they just might not grow? If the soccer had any brains there first statement would have been, we want to be as big as you? See, win friends and influience people, dont charge the gate like a half cocked bull.

My argument is based on the premiss that it is impractical to not represent every Local Government Area from Metropolitan Sydney.  The NRL's current system ignores a fair few LGA's from the Sydney area.

They are:

• North Sydney
• Camden
• Fairfield
• Liverpool
• Holroyd
• Blacktown
• Baulkham Hills
• Hornsby
• Ku-Ring-Gai
• Rye
• Willougby
• Canada Bay
• Pittwater
• Straithfield

The NRL's refusing to represent the aforementioned LGA's could lead to the AFL, ARU and FFA turning these regions into a talent nursery for the AFL, Super 14 and A-League.  If the people in the aforementioned LGA's believe they can relate to the Swans, Warratahs and/or Sydney FC, then they might turn their backs on Rugby League.

A few Sydney-based NRL club(s) represent 2 suburbs each, but they don't represent them equally.  The Bulldogs favour Canterbury over Bankstow; the Sea Eagles favour Manly over Warringah; the Roosters favour the City of Sydney and Botany Bay over the other Eastern suburbs it is meant to represent and the Sharks favour the the suburb, Cronulla, over the shire it is located in.

It would be better to represent all of Metropolitan Sydney's LGAs.  For example, the LGA's from the northern suburbs could be represented by a team who call themselves Sydney North Bears (or Northern Bears);  the LGA's from the southern suburbs could be represented by South Sydney Rabbitohs; the LGA's from the western suburbs could be represented by a team who call themselves the West Sydney Redbacks, the City of Sydney can be represented by the Sydney City Roosters; the LGA's that are on the coastline can be represented by a team called the Sydney Coast Waves (or Sydney Coast Slayers).

A lot of residents from south-east Queensland support the Sydney-based clubs.  Especially the Dragons, Eels and Bulldogs.   Therefore, the NRL could capitalise on this by relocating 2 or three of the teams to south-east Queensland.

It might work, but it wil take time.  The NRL is cautious about doing this as two of the four ARL's expansion teams that were included in the 1995 competition ended up folding by 1998.

Surely there is people in these areas that can support a team in sydney, if by making the teams smaller is going to get more support then why did it not work when they merged teams last time? I really think that we just need to concentrate on what we have, The other codes are going to get followings no matter what the n.r.l do, its a fact of life, but no good going backwards now, we are talking about expansion, not demolition. I think south sydney will get bigger, and if other clubs start doing it tough, then they will have to increase there support ground.

In my opinion, it's because the fans didn't want to support a joint-venture club.  It's why I believe the NRL should have set up brand new clubs that were unaffiliated with past NRL/ARL/NSWRL clubs.

E3L, I think your missing a subtle point here. The BRL dies by 1995 because of the Broncos. The QRL had to do something drastic to revamp itself and set up the QLD cup... it still isn't what it used to be. Now the Broncos were not a team that was made of mergers from others. They were a brand new team that went to hit the NSW market. Remember the QRL and NSWRL were fighting each othere for the best comp in the country... the money was in the south QRL to survive needed some of that. As soon as you had Wally lewis in a team that was playing in the NSW comp then the focus shifted there and the local comp died.

This has led to a unified comp for all with the old copmps feeding into the NRL... beaut that is the evolution that we have got to, but now you want to destroy a quarter of that and force people that still have their rivalries to follow some sterile team where no one gest along... its like saying that Hull KR and Hull FC should merge, or Sheffield and Huddersfield, or wigan and wdnes... it wont happen or work!

State of roigib again is completely different concept, your not playing for a club, your playing for a stste, club rivalries go to the back there becasue your are supporting somethiing different... this concepts however would not work domestically. Look if the War of the Roses was brought back by the Engl;ish watcgh them get 100% better.

Hey druzik, i have seen this line rumble in the jungle used, cant remember where but i think it was by one of the n.r.l teams, i wonder if they are reading this stuff, it just came to me, it was used for a boxing match in the paper on sunday? about a fight between carl webb and willie mason, boxing match,,hehe To be honest i think the queesland cup is doing nicely now , and are feeder clubs to the big n.r.l teams, lots of talent comes out of these teams, and i see that they have players also from france and england in there squads,? all good on the down under front, but i have already said league is on the up, believe it, its true.

Yeh just checking the 'it's war' article. Gallop says that he is looking at 4 areas, central coast, wellington, sunny coast and perth. Great to here that expansion is on the cards in the next few years. However s you say oikee, it would have been better for him to wait until after the WC, now he will have to adress this and that will take time and attention away from the great year we have ahead. I think the two best options would be Perth and Sunny coast, sure CC coast need a team and Gallop said teams might want to consider amalgamation, so i don't see why a sydeny based team can't move to CC. I know there would be some pissed off fans but there would be some happy Central coastians. Besides it will be better in the long run for league.

On wellington, however, im undecided to whether it would be a good idea or not. It has many pros and cons.

Pros : Would bring more attention to league in NZ, having 2 teams rather than 1, would give wellington based leagies a team to support, should grow the popularity of league in NZ, could bring enough popularity to NZ that both NRL team could be scrapped in the next 10 years and replaced with a high profile NZ domestic comp that will satisfy NZ league.

Cons : Would further kill off any domestic comp, Coulkd take up a place in the NRL that could be occupied by an aussie team.

Carl Webb Vs Willie Mason

I love it, would be a great spectacle for league. Being a bulldogs supporter mason has gone down a few notches in my book lately, i never really liked him that much when he was playing for the dogs. So now he plays for NSW and my least favorite NRL club. On the other side, i am a big fan of webb, add to that he is a relation. Webb has a proud boxing past and i think he would handle mason easily, bring it on!
