    Re: Expansion

I think one answer for the AFL would be to scrap the pre-season competition and then use the extra weeks to have a post-season AFL SOO series..actually a very good idea would be to have it in the two weeks after the GF...with a slightly shorter season due to scrapping the pre-season an AFL SOO game could possibly be timed so that it come up against the NRL GF - imagine a Vic v SA/WA night clash directly opposite the NRL GF - that would would really hit the NRL where it hurts......

i don't think the AFL is interested in SOO....but it should once again consider a three way SOO series ....it is hard to organise but Vic v WA and Vic v SA games played in WA and SA respectively would be the way to go - and the WA v SA game to be played alternately in WA and SA ...both WA and SA would turn out in support and the clubs would be able to nurse any injuries through the off-season...also it seems the players really want this more than anything...they want to play for their state - and not for a 'dream team'....

and they should also include the other states - QLD, NSW, Allies (NT/Tasi/ACT) in a second tier that does not play WA/SA or Vic ...that way all the best players from all regions get to represent their state...and finally it seems the interantional series with ireland seems to be therefore the All Australian team could be picked from he state sides...

yes RL has done pretty well out of copying aussies rules with SOO...then again it is far easier to run SOO with just two teams - and with a game that players are able to play mid-week and back up...

    Re: Expansion

Dogged youve mentioned a couple of times now about the luxury of having players that are able to play mid-week and back up.  They do have a week off, they do not play for their respective clubs the weekends before SoO. As for some players running up to 15k's per match, it must be alot easier with an unlimited interchange and a game that is played in quarters.

    Re: Expansion

RL players using aussie rules as training!?...well that's interesting - never heard that before...most RL players simply don't have the aerobic fitness required to last 10 mins playing aussie rules, let alone basic "catching skills" or kicking skills....it'd be very amusing seeing RL players trying to play aussie rules - it's be just like watching u9s...

    Re: Expansion

Would also be interesting to watch aussie rules players play league, you guys would not last 5 minutes on a league feild. No good trying to compare the 2 games dogged, we all know who the toughest of the 2 sports are i think. Long legs are a no-no in league, you would be off in the 1st tackle, their skinny legs would snap in half.   We dont need to get into a fighting match about the tougher game, if you think you do then bring it on, why do you think that league is so popular in our 2 states, "as you keep telling us", its the toughest sport on earth.

Have a look at the origin consept on google, the aussie rules have said its dead and buried, this is good thinking on their behalf, if you try to revive it would be the death-knell of your sport, people dont rate your origin concept, even your own administrators have rejected the notion, read the last report i posted.

    Re: Expansion

i agree...i tried to tell you this before - AFL doesn't rate SOO..we agree...the 'dream team' isn't even a SOO team anyway......if SOO comes back it will be dure to the players wanting it...

yes yes...RL is the self-proclaimed toughest game on earth....whatever oikee....there are many games that would claim that, including aussie rules which you have to be very very fit to play... don't really care much about these 'tough' claims but for the record for what I would say RL is the weakest of the running football codes (codes where you mostly run the ball like NRL,NFL and RUnion)....NFL and Runion have much bigger and stroner players...RL is full of fat, five foot six midgets that would struggle to run out of sight on a dark night....

    Re: Expansion

As a matter of fact RL players play GayFL,Soccer,Touch Footy etc for training to mix it up! I have never heard of An Aust Rules player playing RL for training! The top of the tree in toughness is RL, and the sooner you understand that the better you will appreciate all sports.

    Re: Expansion

I dont think you understand the type of fitness required in a rugby league game. It involves more than just running. Imagine if you were in a wrestle, appreciate that sought of fitness many times over . I have played Aust Rules for training and thought it was fun, but definitley nowhere near as hard and tough as RL! You must appreciate this point or you will never have a balanced view of sport. As I stated, and all soccer guys I have met,all recognise RL as the toughest football code without a doubt! These soccer guys acknowledge this fact, whereas the Aust Rules players are deluded if they think Aust Rules is near RL for genuine toughness! In the boast for machoism RL wins hands down!

As one of my learned friends once put it, "The Ausie Rules attack on RL is akin to the effeminisation of the Australian male!"

    Re: Expansion

rooster you only ever step DOWN from aussie rules to other lesser codes.....

NFL - Darren Bennet, Saverio Rocha - two ex-AFL players who got too old and tired to play AFL but went on the play NFL...

Rugby League (Super League) - Adrian Barich - ex- AFL player (ex West Coast Eagle)...retired AFL player that trained and played for the Western Reds; he was in his mid-30s, retired from AFL due to age/too slow but came back to play RLeague...fortunately for Barich few skills were required and only moderate fitness..

    Re: Expansion

Never heard of any of those 3 players, and i hope they had plenty of steriods for the NFL games, or were they just kickers like the rest of your players.

The reason you guys punch the ball is because you cant pass the ball, and you also dont have knock-ons other wise we would be forever having scrums.

Look there is skills in every game, even soccer has good skills, with your foot, and aussie rules catching, but if you drop the ball this is o.k  , because you have no rules to worry about, even rugby has rules, too many rules mind you , league is balanced across the field, and now we have wingers that jump for the ball, we must have stole this off you as well, but we do tend to improve our game.

As for your 5 foot six comment, alfie langer was that tall, and he was the smallest player in league.

    Re: Expansion

Once again you have missed the point! You have quoted NFL which is considered not on the same page as RL for toughness and an Aust Rules player who has decided to play a very low level RL after his GAYFL career is finished. In saying that, I do respect the player for having a go. He is obviously much tougher than you will ever be! Once again, I am talking about current footballers being able to play a code of football during training! The GAYFL players cannot, have not and will not play RL for training. Quite simply they will get hurt! Hopefully you will come to your senses and appreciate what I am conveying to you. Cold hard fact!

    Re: Expansion

low level?...what are you talking about? - mate this was Western reds in the early 1990s...they played the top level - Superleague/ARL level...so you had a broken down AFL player with top level RL players..fact....no RL player could ever go the other way...

NFL weak?...why?...because they wear padding?...like RL players wear padding?...RL just wear their padding underneath - ...not much difference really ...some of those NFL guys are massive and would have RL players for breakfast in a head-on collision...anyway dream on mate...

why would AFL players warm up playing RL? it makes no sense at all that's why...and they already do tacking drillls anyway...in AFL you must deal with 360 degree options, including forward passing and long/short options....to restrict options to 180 degree, backward short options would teach AFL players nothing - the ball carrier or the tackler....you'd never make an AFL coach!!! ...you don't go and dumb down and simplify tackling to RL standard.....no point

    Re: Expansion

Adrian Barich statistics for western reds in 1st grade: 0 games, 0 tries.

In fact no AFL/VFL player has EVER played 1st grade NSWRL/ARL/Superleague or NRL.  Or vice versa.

Incidently Barichs FIRST sport was rugby(union) as a child.....then he went on to play the highest level aussie rules.

    dogged:

LOL They were punters... only cick the ball... how hard is that, they were not even in the line to get a tackle in or get tackled!. Purely there on a defensive move to get a team out of trouble when stuck on their line. Hut it back, lateral it back to the punter and put in a 80 m kick... lol
