Oh man Oikee! Its like the über RL competition. Its the FA cup of Rugby League. First played in 1897 all RL teams amateur to Pro can play in it. This year there are 98 teams that have taken part. From England, Wales, Scotland, France and Russia. Its a Knock out comp, just like the FA cup, and its probably the only chance where an amateur team will have a chance to play (and maybe beat) a pro team! Its probably more prestigeous than the super league, it packs out wmbley with 80-90,000 no problem. I am sorting out tickets already for it. I don't care who is in the Final I just wanna be there. This thing in the UK is bigger than the SoO. A qualification Round was in January with games to fill out the last few spots in the main draw. So at the moment the amateur teams have fought it out to take places against the NL 1 and NL 2 teams next round they then will wither down to the last 32 round where the SL teams come in... then its a real fight to the death... the top 32 teams in Europe basically going at it hammer and tong!
The last few years have produced some memorable matches, in 2005 Toulouse made the Semis, which was huge. Russia also fielded their first sides, the top two from their comp and last year was the first time ever that a non British team had made the final, with Catalans loosing to St Helens.
Marv went on the weekend to the Leigh Miners v Vereya (russia) match. Leigh are the top UK amateur side and vereya came second last year in the Russian championships. Next round see the Russian Champions Lokomotive Moscow and last years top 3 French Clubs come in against the NL teams. I am hoping to get out to the Loko game myself.

Yup, it's a knockout comp. Like I said its the FA cup of british Rugby league. Vereya from russia traveled to Leigh and lost 64-12. So that's it for them. They now have their own Championships and Knockout comp to worry about. Lokomotive moscow comes in the next round with the NL teams. There is another smaller comp, the Northern Rail Cup, just for the NL1 and NL2 teams. Its 8 pool groups with the winner of each group going into a Knockout phase.
Not sure if you remember the panasonic cup in the, but australia used to have a mid week knockout comp where QLD and NSW teams competed against each other. some years, WA, NT, SA and PNG sent in teams as well. Was open to all from ememory as well. I have always been dumbfounded why they canned it. There used to be soooo much more RL being played in Aus than now.

Yes druzik, i remember the panasonic cup, funny when you look back and think why they got rid of things, with the talk going around about getting rid of the world club challange, now when you think about it this one might have died, but hopefully after this year and the big crowd they do something special with the game, gee they get lots of good comps in england, and i love this challenge cup setup, just never knew anything about how it came about, whoever said get rid of this is crazy, i heard someone say this at one point? great stuff, thanks for that. hope you enjoy the final, i might be there next year?

... and also remember that if that is not enough, there is the Lord Derby cup which is just for the french teams. Also pulls big crowds (by french standards).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Derby_Cup There was in 1935 a "Super Game" played between the French and English cup winners... Lyon being the one and only winners of this game. In a sense this is what the World club challenge is these days..

Realsided didnt say who is who, the Red/yellow is the russian Vereya team and the Black is Leigh Miners. Marv was there so the photos are curtesy of him. I have more pics up on my website http://www.rugbyleagueinternationalscores.com/News/photos.html .
Last years CC was awesome. 1st time in its history that a non English team made the final, Catalans that is.

Will admit it is great to see the smaller teams get a chance to play the big clubs.Upsets are quite rare now though due to the huge gulf between SL and the lower clubs. Have seen some great matches over the years and some great finals, back in the 80's Halifax beating Saints by a point,Hull beating Widnes in a replay are two that stand out.
My team,Dewsbury, last won the cup in 1942.Can't ever see them winning it again but always look out for the draw to see if they get the chance to put one over a bigger club. They also played in the first challenge cup final at Wembley back in 1923,losing to Wigan.
The Challenge Cup is part of every English clubs history, every fan will have stories and days out to remember from the cup - thats why it is such a special competition.
