Why won't the ARL help me???

I'm the secretary of a junior rugby league club here in Qld, where the WC Final will be held.  I've been lucky enough to obtain tickets for the event, as we're in a country town and most people here wouldn't get another chance to go, because it's not exactly a cheap night out for a family.  However, through our footy club they can pay off their tickets and have the chance to go.

But why won't the ARL help me to promote it? I've contacted them several times through the website and requested anything to help me get the message out, and they haven't even bothered to reply.  How can they expect a world class event to be a success when they don't look after the little people? Do they only care about corporate packages? What about the kids that play now, the future stars of rugby league?? Wake up and smell the coffee, ARL!!!

Have you contacted the rlwc08 people here on the site. They tend to be pretty good at replying. That could be your best bet at the moment. Which town you in?

Yes, I've tried contacting them via this website, with no replies.  I guess they're just trying to ignore me. Maybe I should email them every week until I get and answer, ala Shawshank Redemption! :)

I live in Laidley, which is about half way between Ipswich & Toowoomba.

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

Ah yes, traveled through there a few times heading up to t'wmba for the spring festivals.

Mmmm surprising about them not contacting you, they were pretty good replying to me. How about the actual ARL or NRL websites? Maybe through there you can contact someone.

But yes sometimes bombarding them is the best way to get through.

Its very dissapointing to hear this.

promote it where?  in your club? if so, why is it so hard to promote in your own club?

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

It's hard to promote it because unless you're a hard-core rugby league fan, such as myself & my husband, there's not a lot being said about it.  I don't know if you're in Australia or not, but there are no TV ads, no newspaper ads, nothing.  I think the Footy Show has mentioned it once or twice, but I guess they're just concentrating on the season ahead and not what happens after it.

There's a thread about merchandise going on this forum - that all has something to do with it too.  If the sports stores and KMart aren't selling the merchandise, how is anyone going to know about it??  It's hard to get anyone excited about something they've never heard of!  Just because your kids play rugby league doesn't mean you know what's going on in the rugby league world - we have parents who have absolutely no idea about the game, they just let their kids play because they want to play.

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

Should be a bit of promotion done in the country areas, i agree, but they did have the centenary celebrations up here in toowoomba a couple of weeks ago, and this did not get alot of media stories either, i was looking in the local paper and they did not even have it under events happenning for that month.? You would think league was a dirty word around here, anyway the diehard fans know what is going on at least. You will have to do the promoting yourself lionsmum.

i've seen tv ads for it a few times... but you're correct... they could be doing a better job.  There is no hype... no comment about it by RL folk in the media... no build up of significance that covers the broader community...

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

I have also seen 1 TV ad and a few ads in the Sydney Morning Herald and Daily Telegraph (Sydney newspaper) placed by tour companies advertising packages for matches in Sydney and interstate, these have been about 1/4 to 1/8 of a page so a decent size.

I would have thought the RLIF or ARL would have had official posters sent to all RL clubs in Oz for display throughout the entire season. They should also have allowed clubs a window of 1-2 months to buy merchandise before public release for auctioning to allow clubs to make some much needed money.

I think lionsmum is 100% correct in stating that only the died in the wool RL nuts know there is a World Cup coming this year.

There should be enough tickets sold for the tournament and therefore money flowing in by now for things to be starting to take shape on the marketing front. The RLIF needs to take a leaf out of the Union and Soccer bodies and have merchandise available long (at least 6 months) before the tournament commences.

Lionsmum, I wish you luck and good on you for having a go at helping to promote RL and the tournament, you have my admiration. If the RLIF and ARL just realised what a precious commodity volunteers like yourself who want to help promote their tournaments for free are. I hope you persist and are successful and please keep us all updated.

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

Thanks for your support! I've been involved in rugby league all my life and our local club was close to folding last year because of lack of volunteers.  So a few of us stepped up to the plate, and now that we have a whole new committee with fresh ideas we find that we're getting a lot of positive feedback and we have lots of new registered families this year.  Many of them are new to the game and unless they see "in your face" advertising, they don't realise just how much opportunity is out there - not to rise to the ranks of the NRL but to learn about the game, have a lot of fun and maybe meet some of their idols if they're lucky.

Today our Under 9 players had the opportunity to play an exhibition match at the half time break of the Titans/Warriors game.  We took a bus load of families down there (a 2 hour trip), and most of those kids had never been to a big game, let alone their parents! So it was a big thrill for them to run on the same surface as the big guys.  While we were there, they had a setup outside the stadium for RWL08, with a competition for the kids to throw a footy through a hole.  I went to the guy running the show with my dilemma, and he gave me the name of the events company promoting the World Cup.  So wish me luck!!

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

its great to have people like you involved in rugby league. i would just keep emailing, they cant ignore you forever. email the arl, rlwc committee, the footy show, the sunday roast, anyone who you think could spread the word.

whilst i think the rlwc will be successful and i will be going to as many games as possible, the arl could be doing so much more. they need to be creating awareness at the moment. there are still people out there who dont know the cup is on. we should be able to sell out every game!

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

The old addage, "charity begins at home", sums up the situation.  The ARL ought to look after the long-serving fans from rural Australia.  It needs them just as much as it needs its fans from urban Australian.  A lot of most talented, marketable players to have ever played the game came from rural Australia.

The parents of children in rural Australia who do their best to keep Rugby League alive and well in it ought to be congratulated and commended.  It's time for the ARL to get up of its backside and bond with its fans from rural Australia.  Failure to do so could lead to the AFL and ARU succeeding in spreading their sport to rural Queensland.

    -----

Extra information that is tangentially related to this thread.

Sadly, the NRL and ARL care more about appeasing the feminazis than they do about helping the fans.  I experienced this when I went to the Australia Kangaroos v Great Britain Lions Test match at Suncorp Stadium in 2006.  The ground announcer spoke about an anti-male, pro-femianzi campaign on violence against women.  The campaign marginalised violence against men and deceived people into thinking that violence against women is worse than it really is.

The NRL and ARL ought to drop their "lets pander to the feminazis by demonising men and making women look virtuous" campaign.  The absurd stance it has on violence against women is a weak attempt to appease the anti-male feminists who mock anything that is related to masculinity (IE. watching and playing contact sport).  The information on the websites from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the US's Bureau of Justice (BOJ) repudiates the notion that violence against women is more rampant than violence against men.  Its information proves that the vast majority of persons who are victims of murder and interpersonal violence are men.

Very little help is given to the men who are victims of interpersonal violence and domestic violence.  Police officers are trained to treat violence against women as being worse than violence against men.  In the US, influential women such as Anne O'Dell used to tell police officers to make sure that women accounted for no more than a few percent of the people they arrested for domestic violence.  She forced her feminazi view onto them when she trained them how to handle domestic violence situations.

Police officers have told me that they receive a lot of complaints from men who are victims of domestic violence.  Help is usually denied to them.

The women who perpetrate vicious acts of genital mutilation are usually sentenced leniently.  Male criminals tend to be given harsher sentences than female criminals.

Therefore, the NRL's stance on the issue is pointless.  It does nothing for the sport of Rugby League, the fans of the sport, and men in general.  It's why I was (and still am) very upset by the NRL/ARL's support of an anti-male, pro-feminazi campaign. It's why I haven't been to another Rugby League match since, and won't be going to this year's World Cup.  I love the sport, but I won't go to an event that supports an evil agenda such as feminazism (feminism).

I have a wealth of data on my site to validate my accusations.  If anyone wants the statistics, then feel free to ask me for it.

I apologise if my fulmination has diverted attention away from the discussion of Rugby League.  The only reason I brought it up is because I wanted to confirm that lionsmum's plight is linked to the ARL/NRL's lack of concern for the common fan.  The two parties feel as if they no longer need to do anything for the common fan.  They kowtow to feminazis, the media and businessmen because they want to get on the right side of them.

Re: Why won't the ARL help me???

Not a bad point there 3 lions, i tend to think we need to look further at the loss of crowd support also, take the message the afl is sending to their fans < changing the rules to get rid of the ruff stuff, and also have a no fighting policy.

Now if we look beneath the surface here, you will find frustration coming into the game, point in case, Barry Hall the other week. Now i am not saying that their ideas are wrong, and you tend to see alot of pushing and shoving going on in highlight packages, and i will get to my point shortly, now take soccer, this is highlighted even more so with the players scoring a goal and inciting the crowd and over doing the celebrations of a goal.

what this does is make the crowd inraged, hence the violience off the field. With league we sort our problems out on the field.

But what we have to contend with is the women of society who look at this and tell everyone who will listen that the sport is violent, and our administrators get frightened that they will lose fans because of this.

What i say to them is let these women go to there soccer matches and support this so called world game, but dont come crying to us when your son gets his head knocked off when he smart-arrses the other supporters who have had a gutfull of there antics after scoring that goal.

We need to stand firm with league and not let those who wish to distroy our game succeed. These women will eventually get bored with soccer and then have the problem of trying to clean up the problem they have created, look no further than the english league, and think about the soccer league in melbourne before they become the a-league, Only a matter of time before this starts up again. I will give you a full report once it happens.
