Been thinking about this... maybe one solution, to see if any teams or the PNGRFL are ready is to have a pre season knockout comp involving the QLD Cup, NSW Cup and SP cup teams. I had a chat with captain on email where I mentioned the country teams, but i think this would be a long expensive process. BUT

NSW Cup - 12 teams, QLD Cup - 11 teams, SP Cup 9 teams. That is 32 teams, So two rounds a QF, SF and Final, over 10-12 weeks your all sweet! The drawing I would do as the CC. Each round the remaining teams are drawn randomly. have a two or three weeks between rounds so teams can get finaces and flights all done. With no NRL around hopefully some good crowds would get pulled in and some of the old clubs see some money come in. Imagine seeing Wynnum manly play Newtown. Would be great! Of the Mendi mooroks home to the Sharks?

Love the idea druzik, would be a grwat little tournamnt, maybe you could get a bit more wide spread and get the Reds aswell as the victorian, WA, SA and NT state champions.

The other option would be to have the grand finalists from the PNGRFL, Queensland Cup, NSW Cup and Bartercup Cup competitions play alongside the grand finalists from the WARL's Toohey Cup and Jim Beam competition in a 12-team knockout competition.  The competition would be held over 4 rounds, with grand finalists from the Queensland Cup and NSW Cup competitions receiving the bye in the opening round.  The practicality behind this is it gives 4 of the other 8 teams the ability to play at least two games.  If four of those teams had to play against the grand finalists from the Queensland Cup and NSW Cup in the opening round of the tournament, then the would most likely lose and NOT get the valuable experience of playing in a second game.

Small steps jim, its an idea, Maybe idealy throw the tournie open to all team that want to participate like the CC. Amateur to pro and give everyone a shot at something. But the think is the idea is that its run say over Jan, Feb, just before the season srt in March. It gives teams a run and not just pointless trials but something to play for. Then have 2-3 weeks break for recouperation and the season strt. Since most of the Aus teams are feeders for NRL, its not like the NRL teams can't have players get a run either.

I think this is a great concept, I like the 32 team knock out idea and believe it will work. It should include the teams mentioned by jim_57 and this could be done from having to qualify so the top 9 NSW Cup, top 8 QLD Cup and top 6 SP Cup teams would qualify on results from the previous season which would liven up the bottom of the table toward the end of each season as teams attempt to qualify. The other 9 automatic qualifiers would be the top domestic teams from WA, SA, VIC, NT, 2 QLD country qualifiers, ACT and 2 NSW country qualifiers. To save money on travel the first 1 or 2 rounds could be played regionally if need be.

This comp could easily be sold to FOX, commercial TV and gain a few big sponsors.

Yeh it would be a ghreat little tournament, if it went ahead. Sure as hell would put the NAB cup to shame. Maybe also looking to get a NZ side or 2 in there. Who knows it might happen, and down the line all PI's want want a shot; fiji, tonga, CI, Samoa. Oh the possibilities.

An excerpt from the last part of a daily telegraph article:

"And Papua New Guinea Rugby League Chairman Albert Veretau yesterday met with Gallop over Port Moresby's bid for a 2014 licence".

I'd love to see it happen but I think it is unlikely.

Well not sure if your familiar with the CC way of doing things, but eventually that could be the way. have amateur teams come through first, the best of them then take on the NL teams and the bgest of them take on the ESL teams and then its business as usual. Certainly makes for interesting viewing as now in the round of 32 (16 matches) there are at least 2 NL2 teams and one NL1 team to go through to the next round.
