    Re: why?

    Hi Jim_57

The Storm's new stadium is being built right now and is due to be ready for the kick off of the 2009 season. The stadium will be rectangular and commenced as a 20,000 capacity, remodelled to a 25,000 capacity and last I heard was going to be a 27,500 seater. It will also be the home of the Melbourne Victory soccer club in the summer months. Yes, Olympic Park is the worst stadium in Australia for viewing sport and is the key factor behind the Storm's average home ground attendances as the facilities are so antiquated. I have had the experience of buying food and a drink at half-time only to return to my seat and be 20 mins into the second half of the match. And only about 3,000 people at any any match have a really good view.

With the new stadium I would imagine they should have a lot more season ticket holders and the catering should improve immensely so evryone is not waiting the standard 30 mins for a pie.

    Re: why?

Sounds great rowly, might see if i can make my way down for a game next year, any idea why it has taken them so long? i mean GC got a brand spanking new stadium the 2nd year in the big time. Anyway let's hope those victorians can sell out some NRL games, they do love their sport, almost as much as us QLDers ;-).

The new meblourne stadium is now 31,000 capacity. I also read elsewherew if necessary the stadium has been pre-designed so that it can be easily upgraded to 50,000 if need be.

    Re: why?

According to an a-league article i read the stadium is set for 31,000 capacity, apparently though they think it will expand to 50,000 before long so apparently they're building so that when it comes time to upgrade it will not all have to be redone, make sense? i don't know just going off an article.

    Re: why?

Smart idea if it is... three 50,000+ stadiums in Melbourne... they think they are the centre of sport in Oz or something... lol

    Re: why?

I think the upgrade would be dependant on the soccer guys having a successful bid for the Soccer World Cup. The Storm would likely pull 15,000 - 20,000 per home game so this stadium would then be way too big if upgraded to that size. The only exception would be the Broncos when they would probably get 25,000. I would prefer to see the stadium left at about 31,000 capacity to give it the atmosphere it needs otherwise Storm home games will end up like a night of NRL at ANZ Stadium which will never convert anyone in Victoria to the sport.

    Re: why?

i think the super league teams need to fix some of there grounds the only 2 good one's are the jjb and kc that's cause there soccer teams play there sum of the grounds there are really old with hills an bad seats they wanna build the game there they should give the teams some half dacent stadiums.

Yep they do, that's what the whole franchise process is doing, its forcing teams to have to finally upgrade facilities. Hull KR are doing their ground, Salford are also getting a brand spanking new ground. Headingly alsready is good ground I quite liked it, Celtic need to do their ground up, I just cant see them with a liscenece with the way Brewery field is now... Its all getting there slowly mate.

    Re: why?

Would it be fair to say druzik , because of the relegation system they had in place no one could afford jack  ####  before? they now have changed the way they are doing things. Lets think about this, a better t/v deal and clubs now pulling there fingers out to get in the super dooper league?

Wanye bennett is headed to the saints druzik, sorry saint george that is , in sydney, close but no cigar. Tell you something though, i think he will improve crowd numbers down there, just his presense is good for the game. I think that daniel anderson is going to end up at the bronco's, nothing been said but he looks the best chioce to me.

I am not sure I am the best person to ask about this, I am still learning much about the old and new English systems, but I think, thhis is purely my view of things, what it is doing is giving clubs a bit more stability, that they can sign on players on longer term contracts now and try and build up their home grown player base. People used to complain about the fact that the english would buy OS players, but in many ways they had no choice. A team like say Castleford (this is just an example), in NL1 had only about 100-200,000 pounds to play with and only alowed 2 foreign players in their quota (I think this correct), so they get promoted up to SL. Now in order to avoid relegation again, they would just go and buy as many foreign players as they could (upto 10 was the quota I think), the money goes into high priced OS players instead of into their club, Stadium and Juniors. If they did get relegated, then they need to ditxh the foreign players and start from scratch again and basically have a very ordinary player stock, so would take potentiall another 2-3 years to get to SL again.

Withe the franchise system, two things are happening, the OS player quota is being reduced, till I think in 2010 it will be only 3/25 of the playing squad in your books. The cap is increasing a bit, but most of all, because there is no threat of relegation juniors and local players can be developed, and the ESL is stressing that this is one of the main criteria a team is being assesed on.

Again these are my views and how I see things, someone in the UK may want to correct me where I am wrong.

Yes read that he's heading there, well they cant do any worse than what brown did. I think Brown was too nice a guy to be a coach. It will be a shock for the dragons with Benny in there. The thing about Kograh is that its a pretty small ground anyway even with the new improvements. I think its no bigger than 15,000, that's why having WIN in Illawarra is so integral, its about 22,000 there and the Hurstvill fans are willing to drive for the day to the gong (why wouldnt you its awesome doen there) and make a day of it. St George has always had the crowds despite the ground, they have some pretty zealous fans, one of the few really really well supported clubs in Sydney... it pains me to say that you know. ;)

    Re: why?

Well Leeds dont sell out Headingly when they play bradford, and that's about 22,000 I think, so not sure if an Elland road move is wise... if it were the case those crowds coming in then sure, the WCC showed that the game can be a success there... but I warn watcg Leeds Utd kick up a stink that RL is ruining THEIR football pitch.

that would be fair to say oikee, when a team gets promoted obviously they dont have the staff to compete in SL so they need to quickly recruit them, sometimes this involves signing anyone with some experience, chances are this team that just got promorted doesnt have the clout of a wigan or saints so they look to getting things right on the pitch which neglects other stuff like junior development or stadia.

Wakefield are a good example of this, they have spent 10 year in SL but done nothing to the stadium just surviving each year, whith no p+r they can get a chance to plan years ahead with their businesses.

i cant say as there isnt a bit of me that will miss P+R though

Bradfords ground is awful but theirs more chance of pi$$ing in the queens handbag than Leeds RL playing at elland rd regualry
