    Toowoomba players.

Look this does not only have to be about Toowoomba players, can be used for any area across the globe. Being a toowoomba boy myself i thought i might add a little piece about Toowoomba and its league history. The reason why i have brought this up is because my dad loves league and remembers his playing days. The first thing i noticed in the top 100 players of the century was the amount of players mentioned with toowoomba in there resume.

     As follows= Vic Armbruster,,Tom Gorman,,Duncan Hall,,Vic Hey,,Mick madsen,,Herb Steinohrt,,Duncan Thompson.

I will also include Arther Beetson, from Roma and Darren Lockyer Roma products and Steve Price Toowoomba.. This is  one tenth of the Greatest Players over the century.

Now to go on a personal journey for my dad, I keep him informed about these events in league as he does not get around real well these days, But has foxtel so he can watch the league each season. When i mentioned to him the other day about the players on the new league site with all the great players on the card decks,, if you have seen this then you know what i am talking about. Any hows he started to rattle off these names to me and i looked them up, all the names he told me were on there? So i went back to him sat down and started to talk to him about his league days. The names he told me of were all the players that he use to play against when he was at roma himself, back in the 50's.My dad was 21 worked railways.

These names included Noel Hazzard,, Des Mcgovern,,Bob mcmahon,,Bob Banks,,Herb Steinohrt,,Duncan Hall.  This peaked my interest and i asked more about his league days. He told me he remembered playing against these players for the five years he was out west. These players were also coaches of other teams, as in lower grades around these areas as well as playing themselves,

     Roma,,, St George,,,Quilpie,,,Chinchilla,,Miles,,,Cunnamulla,,Goondawindee.

He remembered coaching Arther beetson at the age of 12 when dad  was at the roma city leagues club, and the minister asked him to coach the convert lads, he remembers artie as being useless back in those days.He also relayed a day he was playing out there against the Des Mcgovern team in which Des clothslined him. He did not come back on after this incident until the second half. But he said Des stayed on the wing for the rest of the game. My father played for 5 years out west before he moved back into Toowoomba, and at a early age had me playing league. Now i know how i got into league.

Glad i found out this info about him, and his memories, puts a smile on my face.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

Toowoomba is the largest inland city in Queensland. Sits on top of the Great Dividing Range and part of the Darling Downs. Water is the no1 priority and it has been raining the last 2 days. Things are looking up.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

Just my last final thought about the clydesdales getting out of the queensland cup. When i was young and in the toowoomba team we use to play all the country teams like roma dalby st george pittsworth clifton rockhampton, and the winner would then go on to play the best brisbane boys side. This is why i have shown the picture above with these teams playing. ToowoombaV Brisbane

Now what toowoomba should do is start this compitition back up again and play teams from the bush so we can keep producing the next genaration of players, i think it is what happened to brisbane when the broncos arrived, all the clubs suffered, now we have a chance to resurect this, good news all round i think. Our comp wont suffer, we have some of the hardest bushies playing the game.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

another notch for a toowoomba lad.

AFTER two phenomenally successful seasons in charge of Celtic Crusaders, John Dixon could be forgiven for easing off ahead of the new campaign.

The Crusaders take their National League One bow on Good Friday after two successive promotions, during which time Wales’ only full-time side have picked up trophies, records and a host of individual awards.

This season sees the Crusaders step up to a whole new level, with the likes of Widnes, Featherstone Rovers and Salford visiting the Brewery Field.

But merely surviving in rugby league’s second tier is not an option for the ebullient Dixon.

“The aim is promotion, no doubt about it,” said the 56-year-old Aussie. “We’ve tasted success in the last two seasons and we want more.

“It’s obviously another step up for us, and we’ve got some serious footy to play this season.

“There won’t be many opportunities to ease off the gas a little, as there have been in the last couple of seasons.

“But we showed in a few games last year we can compete with teams at this level.

“We recruited well in the close season and if we prepare well enough, I’m positive there’s enough quality in our squad to be right up there challenging for honours.”

Before becoming head coach at the Crusaders, Dixon was little known outside his native Australia.

He played A-grade rugby for All Whites in the Toowoomba competition 1973-77, earning selection in the Toowoomba representative team against the touring Great Britain side in 1975, and then playing for Brothers in the Rockhampton league.

But it is as a coach that the former PE teacher has made his mark.

The last 10 years was spent as assistant coach at top Australian NRL club Brisbane Broncos, whom he helped to several major honours including national and world titles.

He was also in charge of the Broncos’ feeder club, Toowoomba Clydesdales, and coached Queensland Students who toured the UK in 2001, beating the Welsh Students at Treorchy.

So after a lifetime Down Under, what was it about Celtic Crusaders that convinced him to move 12,000 miles from home and take his first head coach role at the age of 53?

“For me to get such an opportunity at this stage of my career was a tremendous one,” he said.

“When I had the call from the Broncos to join their coaching staff, it took two seconds to decide.

“And when I got the call from the then chief executive Chris O’Callaghan to join the Crusaders, even though it was the other side of the world, it only took me and my wife two minutes to say ‘yes’.

“To me, Chris captured a dream – I couldn’t see a way that rugby league in Wales couldn’t succeed, especially with a population who are sport crazy.”

He added: “I never saw myself as head coach at the Broncos, but that wasn’t because I didn’t think I was capable of doing the job.

“It was more to do with the fact that I couldn’t see the position becoming available.”

Dixon settled into his post at the Crusaders as quickly as he and his family settled into their new home at Ogmore-by-Sea.

Their only blemish so far this term was the last gasp defeat six days ago to London Skolars in the group stages of the Northern Rail Cup, a match for which Dixon chose to rest key players.

Russian side Locomotiv Moscow present a different kind of test in round three of the Carnegie Challenge Cup on Sunday (12noon), before they complete their Northern Rail Cup group at home to Doncaster on March 15.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

Looking good for the Celtic Crusaders to join the super league next year. As druzik has posted they have defeated the Russian Locomotov team 52-10 and head into the next round of the challenge cup. Be good to see wales get a team  into the super league,

Yeah but a p!$$ poor crowd, they got like only 370 people to the game... CC really need to get the marketing departement into full swing if they want that SLL.

Well if that is the case druzik then give the licience to another french team? Why would anyone in there right mind give a licience to wales with that sort of support, let them linger on the outta until they grow some spine. If they love union that much well thats up to them. Grow france and even move into ireland and scotland before wales. At least the later 2 have more support.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

Yeh i posted on this last night but it didnt go through, ah well. What i said was that basically CC crowds need to pick up alot, their NL games are only getting 1000 people still, i would still love to see CC make SL but with these crowds it looks unlikely.

    Re: Toowoomba players.

With those sort of crowds it looks like NO-WAY, just let them have the millinium magic to see what they missed out on, and grow other areas before you give the welsh anything, They have just won the six nations or are going to so why bother with a lost cause. Move on league to better things. You can let them crawl back in 20 years when they have been beaten into submission by other countries in union.

Am not sure another French team is the way to go mate. Toulouse have had a poor season this year... they made their bid on the back of their CC semi final performance a few years back... they'll need to show that again this year... plus their crowds are poor as well, RU is quite strong there.

Personallt I think that at least one of the following English clubs need to be back in, Salford, Widnes, Leigh. Teams that even in NL1 get crowds that rival some SL corwds. Widners gor 7500 for their CC game last week alone!

Scotland and Ireland are no where near ready for a SL franchise... CC well, they really need to do something there. Maybe a re-location to Cardiff or something. Bridgend really is a solid rock foundation of RU. Last year for the international, you had RUnistas trying to tell me the RL match was called off cause it was flooded... rubbish!
