    Brian Carney

    Hi all,

I don't know if this has been discussed previously, but would Brian Carney be eligible to play for Ireland in the WC? And if so, would his club, I believe Munster, let him play?

I spoke to an Ireland RL rep last year who had said that Brian came down to watch Ireland play Russia. When i asked about the possibilty of him playing for Ireland again....he said he had a "good" chat about it...

That is an interesting question? Does a player need to be registered as a RL player in the respective federations to be able to rep? I am not sure If I would be happy about this though, he turned his back on RL to play Union... things are not going so well... he needs to come back and prove first he wants to be in RL again. Last thing I want is for him to come back to RL play the WC then go and play RU again.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him play. I think the precedent was set in 2000 with john devereaux et al.

Does that mean Tequiri and Tahu could come back and make them selves available?

There is no-one who would like to see Ireland do well more than me, but if Carney plays while he is still a Union player then that is ridiculous. We already have players hopping between Countries before the World Cup the last thing we need is players hopping between codes! I would love to see Brian Carney come back and play for Ireland at Rugby League but I think he needs to be playing for a League club first. Happy St.Patricks day everyone!

I am ok with it. He's had a good RL career, and is now winding down his career. He's the one genuine Irish RL playing super star. He'll be all over the media and add plenty to the gate. We'd be mad to block it.

And anyway, it's not like similar hasn't happened in Union. I seem to remember Tevita Vaikona playing for Tonga in maybe the Commonwealth games, whilst contracted to Bradford.

    Re: Brian Carney

I wouldn't like to see it unless he ditches RU and signs with a RL club. I wouldn't like to see him play the WC then go back to union, then all the union fans would use that to put league down. If he comes back to RL this year then well let him play, otherwise dont. He is a winger aftyer all and won't make that much of a difference. Ireland have several players eligable running around in SL and NL, Chris Brige, Scott Grix, Stuart Littler etc. as do scotland. I think ireland will have a strong side regardless, can't wait to see them play over here. Whilst on ireland, is Ireland V England WC warm up going to be shown on TV?

    Re: Brian Carney

England V France hasn't been confirmed yet? I'm pretty sure it will go ahead as i saw an article in RLW this month on tony smith the england coach, he mentions the test against france several times so i'd say it's going ahead it the england coach is talking about it like it's set in stone.
