    Tonga thrashes Junior Kangaroos

UNWANTED Gold Coast centre Lelea Paea scored three tries in Tonga's astonishing flogging of the Junior Kangaroos today - and revealed it could be the last time he ever plays alongside his brothers.

After a close call against Fiji last Friday, the Junior Roos were belted around Teifaiva Stadium in Nakualofa yesterday, conceding nine tries in a 44-8 flogging.

Jim Dymock's Tonga line-up included NRL stars Feleti Mateo, Manase Manuokafoa, Fetuli Talanoa, Tevita Metuisela, Richard Fa'aoso and the Paea brothers, Lelea, Lopini and Mickey.

An emotional Paea posed for photos with his brothers and relatives in the middle of the field at fulltime, saying: "I dont know if I'll be playing NRL next year. I'm looking to play rugby union.

"It could be (our last game). Hopefully my rugby union club will let me come back and play in the World Cup with them.

"It's special playing with your brothers. I grew up playing junior footy with them. This year I went up to the Gold Coast and split with them for the first time."

Lopini was also amongst the scorers in front of a 2500 crowd as Tonga raced to a 28-0 lead at the break.

Australia coach Matt Cameron said the game had been a good hit-out for Tonga's World Cup campaign for next year, but suggested Tonga coach Jim Dymock should have given more local players a run.

"It probably would have been nice to see some of the local players play in this game, in the same way Fiji put their local players in."

But Dymock said the ganme was a good chance for Tongan locals to see their NRL stars in person.

"We've got a game against Fiji coming up so we had a bit of pressure to perform," he said.

The game was also colourful off the pitch.

Both sides were introduced to Tongan princess Lupepauu Fusitua before kick-off, the first half went for 37 minutes because no-one knew how long it should have been and Australian Tim Mannah suffered a serious head cut from coral scattered around the pitch.

Albert Hopoate, brother of John, played his first game in two years after spending time as a Mormon missionary. He is contracted to Sydney Roosters next season.

And it was the first game on Tongan soil for Parramatta star Feleti Mateo, who spent two years as a child in Nakualofa.

TONGA 44 (Lelea Paea 3, Kim Vasi, Fetuli Talanoa, Lei Etuine Sua, Tevita Metuisela, Joel Tuafaao, Lopini Paea tries; Tuafaao 4 goals) JUNIOR KANGAROOS 6 (Tim Moltzen try; Trent Hodkinson goal) at Teifaiva Stadium. Referee: Ben Cummins (Australia). Crowd: 2500.

This is an excellent result for Tonga. Considering the players they had at their disposal. However that team on the field will prob be their World Cup squad. However Look at this team under heritage would qualify for Tonga: Michael Jennings( played for Roo's Has indicated he will play for Tonga in Cup), M.Vatuvei. W.Tonga. I.Folau. T.Tupou. V.Anderson. B.Roberts. B.Kite. L.Anderson. F.Moi Moi. T.Tanieki. W.Mason. S.Faiumina: A.Tupou. D.Faiumu. A.Kaufusi. I.Soliola. All except Jennings have played internationally for other Countries And seem lost to Tonga unfortunately. Hopefully Mateo, Paea's Talanoa etc Stick with Tonga and As those players are under 25. They could give the next World Cup a shake

The word on the streets is that the Fiji and Tonga games were not their full test side, more like a XIII side and were selection trials for their full test next week!

The administrative bodies for Rugby League and Rugby Union in Tonga need to work with one another.  They should allow their players to represent their country in Rugby League and Rugby Union.  It would be great for Tongan sport, as it would give rugby league and union players of Tongan heritage a reason to pledge their allegiance to represent Tonga and NOT play for the All Blacks, Wallabies, Kangaroos and/or Kiwis.

Too right. I don't Judge Moi Moi, Tanieki etc for changing They have nothing to play for Tonga. wow 1 test match every few years. Pacific Cup etc should every year along with Tri Nations

    Re: Tonga thrashes Junior Kangaroos

Yes a great result for Tonga. Tonga being ranked 4th in the world behind Aust, NZ, Eng by the rl federation. Huge Acheivement by a county of only 130,000 population wise. Just a correction, I. Soliola, S. Faumuina, D.Faiumu and Ben Roberts are all of Samoan Heritage LOL. All good i guess there are alot of people out there that don't know Billy Slater's mother is of Tongan descent. So he also has a option of playing for Tonga. Players i guess that could be available for Tonga at worldcup time... Billy Slater, Taniela Tuiaki ( just made the kiwis but could switch back to Tonga) Tame Tupou, Vinnie Anderson, Fraser Anderson, Micheal Jennings, Feleti Mateo,Copper Vuna, Richard Fa'aoso, Willie Manu, Epalahame Lauaki, Lopini & Mickey Paea, Fetuli Talanoa, Eddie Paea, Anthony Tupou, Antonio Kaufusi, Willie Tonga, Fuifui Moimoi (also made the kiwis but could also switch back) Joel Taufaao, Albert Hopoate, Charles Tonga, Awen Guttenbeil, Conrad Ta'akimoeaka, Esi Tonga...

    Re: Tonga thrashes Junior Kangaroos

The Tongans could have an awesome squad if they had all of their players at their disposal, as could Samoa etc. The problem is we don't provide enough competition for them and so they all get cherry-picked by the Aussies and Kiwis, with the carrot of playing Origin etc. The annoying thing is there are so many good players to go round if we did do more meaningful internationals we would have a fantastic international competition with matches a million times better than the Rugby Union (yawn) World Cup has thrown up

Don't think so... Samoa's just concentrating on the Qualifiers.... BTW Tonga were lucky against Fiji LOL goes to show how well the local league in Fiji is running....  Tonga had there NRL players... Fiji i heard had a couple of Premier players so Tonga was "real" lucky to get by 14-12 LOL good on Fiji...

Yah mate, its in my signature, I have videos, there is a forum and a blog, and I try and keep upto date with all international scores though its real hard as most websites are down and getting news is difficult... seems the way with RL... but also news linked to "smaller nations" sites and news feeds, its basically a site dedicted more to other teams, not just Oz, UK and NZ. I don't get enough stuff out of the PI's though, just nest to impossible to get news from there on RL, the websited are either under construction for 20 million yers, or have not been updated for 2 years or do not exist. Even the local media tend not to have enything!

Maybe you can keep me and others upto date.
